Li-Fi or Light Fidelity is a light communication setup which runs the wireless communications. These wireless communications run at a very high speed. In Li-Fi we use the sections of visible light as an electromagnetic spectrum for the transmission of information. This process is really fast as the information travels with the speed of light. It has proven to provide a speed of 10 GB per seconds which is 100 times faster than the regular Wi-Fi with the help of a LED bulb that is used in every other household. Since it does not use radio waves and rely totally upon the intensity of light that’s why it is different from the regular Wi-Fi.
Professor Haas invented this term Li-Fi. As the co-founder of pureLi-Fi, he introduced the Li-Fi as a system to transfer data wirelessly through the light bulbs. After that, it was termed as VLC (visible light communication).
How does it work?
It might look similar to the Wi-Fi but there is a lot of difference in its working. Li-fi works with the help of LED which we use in households. Since Li-Fi is a visible light communication system, it contains photo-detectors which receive the signals of light coming from the LED bulbs and then that signal helps data to be converted into a media that could flow with the light due to the presence of an element in its system. Data is usually sent at an amazingly high speed to the photodiode after being latched onto the LED bulb. And since the LED is a semi-conductor, which means the electric current flowing through it is having a very high speed. So, if we feed data into the bulb then automatically the speed of data transfer will increase.
This data being detected by photodetector device converts the data into the electric current and flows throughout the area where the light goes. That signaled data is then converted into binary form or data stream which we know as the internet. And it can be easily used in devices that can catch those signals such as mobile phones, laptops, etc., and that is how Li-Fi is built to provide lightning speed internet. All you have to do is install an LED light bulb with the technology that processes signals. This way the data is streamed in the fastest possible way.

Difference between Li-Fi and Wi-Fi
The most basic difference between the two is that Wi-Fi performs the transmission of data with the help of radio waves and Li-Fi uses the light for doing the same. But there is the difference in their speed. Radio waves travel at a slower rate than the light, that’s why data transmission through Wi-Fi is much slower than the data transmission through Li-Fi.
For Wi-Fi tech, we generally need a router, but for Li-Fi we just need an LED light bulb that is usually installed in every other household, office, lab, street, etc. This is one of the revolutionary wireless technology that helps in data transfer at an amazingly high speed. The speed of Li-Fi is 100 times faster than that of the Wi-Fi.

Using the internet at a phenomenal rate is now a reality with the Li-Fi as a light bulb can not only light up a room, but also just by the installation of tech in the bulb can provide high-speed internet. There are some features of Li-Fi that make it different from the Wi-Fi. Li-Fi is free of the interference issues, unlike the Wi-Fi, and it is generally used in the exploration of the deep sea and outer space and also used in the airline. Wi-Fi cannot pass through the dense environment, but that’s not an issue with the Li-fi as it can easily pass through the dense environment without any interference.
The maximum range of Li-Fi is 10m and is unable to pass through the walls, which ensure the privacy and free from any security concerns. For Li-Fi, all you need is an LED bulb, a lamp driver and most importantly a photodiode or photodetector.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Li-Fi
Li-Fi is one of the most efficient and fastest way to surf the internet. But still, there are some pros and cons to it.
First, let’s talk about some pros.
Since the invention of light bulbs, it has become a necessity of regular household and a basic human need. As these light bulbs are everywhere, this gave the idea of using them as data transmitters through the light signals. It is fast, easily available and asks for very low maintenance.
Li-Fi relies totally on the visible light spectrum, which means where there is light there is the internet. Being faster than the radio waves, Li-Fi is a great alternative to the Wi-Fi which depends on slow radio waves.
Li-Fi works perfectly under different circumstances which can result in heavy interference in the radio waves that are electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves have no effect on Li-Fi which makes it reliable. Also, if Li-Fi is installed in a room, then it can only limit itself within the room, giving an amazingly high speed without any security concerns like hacking since light cannot pass through the walls. So, if you are sitting in a room with Li-Fi then you can experience a speed of internet like never before. It is 100 times faster than the regular Wi-Fi.
Now, let’s talk about some cons
Li-Fi maybe the future of the internet and gives the highest speed but still there are some downsides to it. Li-Fi depends on the light so if you are at a place where there is no light than Li-Fi will become totally useless which gives Wi-Fi an upper hand in this kind of situation because Wi-Fi works with the help of radio waves which don’t need any light to communicate or transfer data.
Also, if your Li-Fi is installed in your living room and you want to access the internet while sitting in your bedroom or toilet, then that would become impossible for you as the Li-Fi does not work inter-walls. Then there is also a problem of interference.
If you are having sunlight in your room then it will easily interfere with the signal and will create problems with the internet accessing. Last but not the least, the installation cost, Li-Fi might look all bright and shiny and attract a lot of audiences, but the charges of installing a Li-Fi technology are very high. Li-Fi is expensive and creates affordability issues. People would rather rely on Wi-Fi than on Li-Fi.
Every technology has its advantages and disadvantages. But if we talk about Li-Fi, then we can say that it can bring a revolution to the world of Internet. The way we surf the internet today, this whole experience can become better if Li-Fi gets introduced to every household. Today we are using Wi-Fi because we can easily access the internet with it to a wide range. But maybe in future, Li-Fi will become an alternative to the Wi-Fi. But for that, there is still some advancement that is yet to be made.
